HOA Annual Meeting
This year your HOA Annual Meeting
will be held in the fellowship hall at
Augustana
Lutheran Church, 5000 E. Alameda Avenue on Monday, November 8, 2010. A
dinner buffet will be served from 6:00 to 7:00 with our annual meeting following. The
entrance to the fellowship hall is on Fairfax Street. From Pelican Pointe go west on
Alameda and turn left onto Elm Street, which will take you directly into Augustana’s
north parking lot. If you make a U-turn and go back to Fairfax, turn right to access
additional parking on the south side of the church. The parking on the south side is closer
to the fellowship hall. If you are coming on Leetsdale, you will have to turn north on
Forest Street. The menu will include a spring mix/fruit salad, rosemary chicken, sour
cream potato casserole, green beans and sheet cake for dessert.
If you plan on attending the dinner buffet portion of the meeting, please RSVP by
November 3 to:
OR
Directorship becoming available.
At our Annual Meeting on November 8,
homeowners will vote on one Board position. Any homeowner-candidate in good
standing must file a statement of his/her intent with our manager at least ten days before
that meeting. There are no other formal requirements, although it is highly recommended
that a candidate submit to our manager a one-page (or less) statement of qualifications,
philosophy of governance, experience in the real (or not so real) world, and any other
factors that the candidate wishes to disclose to our membership. This statement will be
included in our Annual Meeting packet, to be mailed in early October.
Lunch Bunch.
Join fellow Pelican Pointers for lunch on Tuesday, October 12, at 11:30
at Andre’s Confiserie Suisse at 370 S. Garfield Street. We have dined here before, and
everyone enjoyed the limited but delicious menu.
All genders and ages welcome. Good
conversation guaranteed. RSVP to Susan Million at (303) 316-7190.
Pelican Pointe Book Club
will meet on Friday, October 8, at the home of Linda
McCashion, #H-101, at 6:30 p.m. The book to be discussed is Let the Great World Spin,
by Colum McCann. This novel follows the fortunes of a menagerie of New Yorkers
through a day in 1974, the day of Philippe Petit's death-defying tightrope walk between
the newly built Twin Towers. RSVP to Linda at
(303) 940-7224.
Can you beat Tiger Woods?
Windsor Gardens has reinvigorated its golf course and pro
shop, and has a new resident pro, Eric Twesme. The important point, though, is that the
course has invited all Pelican Pointe residents to play there. Features: It's 9 holes, all par
3. Play virtually all year. Special, very low rates are extended to Pelican Pointers. No
membership fees. Low-price golf cart rentals are available. Twilight rates, even lower,
begin at 4 p.m., soon to be 5 p.m. Visit
and enjoy! Call (303) 366-3133.
You don’t have to be Confucius
to play Mah Jongg. There is a small of group of
Pelican Pointe residents that try to play Mah Jongg every Friday afternoon from 1:00 to
4:00. If you are interested in playing with us either
on a regular basis or if you can sub
occasionally, please contact Mary Mulholland at 303-973-9018.
Many thanks
to all who attended our annual “End of Summer” picnic. Everyone
seemed to enjoy the food, festivities, and friendly conversations. Cowboy Catering did a
great job. I have posted some of their cards at the mail kiosks.
SUSMAN UNLEASHED
by Steve Susman
To cover your you-know-what is a self-protective measure,
but to cover your vents in
winter protects your crawl space from low temperatures. If you have one or more of our
new-fangled vent covers, re-install it now. It's designed for easy re-installation, with its
large thumb-screws. If you don't have those covers, close each vent's damper by sliding
it horizontally until you see it through the exterior grill on the vent. Contact me if you
have difficulty with these procedures. Sonny and I can't assist 190 of you in this
exercise, but we don't want any resident to suffer broken fingernails or undue frustration.
Chips and dip
are customary hors d'oeuvres at informal house parties. By now, however,
each of you has noticed our two new Dip
Ahead
signs, warning drivers of their approach
to our blind curve at our northeast corner. The dip is actually a new, expanded drain pan,
designed to carry surface waters into the nearest storm sewer grate. But its incidental
effect requires motorists to slow down there. Please stay on your side of the road as you
negotiate that area in your Maserati. Otherwise, you increase the probability of a head-on
collision.
It's not burlesque, but it's OK to drop your. . . downspout extension.
Many of our units
have downspout extensions. These are designed to pivot upward to allow passage of our
aerators, mowers, and other lawn equipment. However, as our lawn program winds
down for the season, it's important that you lower those extensions. Otherwise, rain and
snow will deposit their streams at the foundation of your unit, instead of further away.
This is a quick, easy, and effective way to help preserve our buildings.
Am I my brother's keeper?, I recall, is asked somewhere in the Bible. At Pelican Pointe,
the answer, in specific situations, is “yes.” To my knowledge, every unit has its own
outdoor spigot, some on patios and some in front. Occasionally, our painters,
landscaping and lawn crews, and our maintenance workers must connect to your
convenient spigot. Usually, this is a short-lived maneuver, consuming little of your
water. Yes, each of us pays his/her own water bill. But Denver water rates are relatively
cheap, and the dollar value of the water appropriated is small.
Similarly, on occasion, our subcontractors or on-site crew will tap into your
outside electrical outlet. As with their water usage, the amounts of power thus taken are
small,
and hardly measurable. Please consider these infrequent usages as your
contribution to the Greater Good. And you are excused from financial contributions at
your next church service.
No, this isn't the Everglades or the Costa Rican jungle,
but snakes do inhabit our area.
From time to time, they emerge, especially (but not exclusively) near the Canal units.
Typical length is about 14". We believe that the Highline Canal and the wetlands to our
east are harbors for these reptiles. Be alert, but also be glad that the New York City
infestation of bedbugs in hotels and theaters hasn't reached Colorado (at least not yet).
Speaking of jungles, it's a jungle "out there."
Desperate persons do desperate things. We
have evidence that one or more persons removed all but a couple of the bolts which hold
together the three primary components of our picnic tables --
perhaps setting the scene for
a theft of one or more of these expensive tables. If you notice what appears to a
reasonable observer to be strange behavior and/or strange persons within our complex,
please notify me [if prior to 8 p.m.]. These conclusions are necessarily subjective and "in
the eyes of the beholder," but we all have a legitimate interest in community safety and
preservation of our physical assets.
Can you recycle your Commodore or Osborne computers, the neckties or the fruitcake
you got for Christmas?
No. At least not in our purple recycling barrels. Here are some
useful tips on the use of that barrel, however:
--
The City recycling trucks won't take boxes that are set beside or on top of the barrel.
--
But you can cut up your cardboard boxes and stuff them inside the barrel.
--
The regular trash pickup trucks will pick up most boxes, if adjacent to your trash
barrel or trash bag.
Certain large items must be left only on the Large Item Pickup days,
which are infrequent, but are scheduled at regular intervals by the City. For further
details call the City at 311 or check their web site at DenverGov.org/DenverRecycles.

Lost and found:
Someone left a pair of sunglasses at The Lighthouse at our picnic there on Sept. 12.
Please contact Mary Mulholland at 303-973-9018 if they are yours.
Also, a ring with a large green stone was found in our complex. Please contact Steve
about the ring.
Weird behavior:
--
Light travels faster than sound. That's why some people appear bright until you hear
them speak.
--
Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but
check
when you say the paint is wet?
--
Why do Americans choose from just two people to run for President and 50 for Miss
America?
--
Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says "In an emergency, notify: " I
put doctor.
--
There is great need for a sarcasm font.

The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.
